DEMONS

On the surface, the piece appears to be a simple rectilinear balance of forms , textures, and shapes punctuated with gold highlights. The square forms are situated securely balanced in their position within the square perimeter of the canvas. Collage elements collected during the artist’s travels are placed seemingly by chance, perhaps owing something to the works of Robert Rauchenberg in their execution. Going beyond its decorative qualities, however, upon closer consideration, the work’s inevitable myriad of messages beckon to the viewer. The imagery mirrors the architecture of the human soul. On the left we have the earthly pursuits symbolised by gold, money, flowers and physical structures (hence the plural used in its title). On the right, a guiding spirit materializes from within the ‘Void’ slicing his way through the superficial, brandishing the sword of truth with righteous anger, leading us onto a higher spiritual plane.

Bridging the two worlds are the open hands of fate, symbols of destruction, greed, wisdom, ability and creation. This movement from the manifested to the emergent, from the temporal to the intangible, a reoccurring theme in the artists work, possibly represents the endless struggle to resolve a dichotomy of duality.
